Water Test Results and Call to Action

One South Oakland residence's water recently tested at a 25 ppb for lead, well over the 15 parts per billion (ppb) considered a high level of lead based on government standards. That particular house is fairly newly constructed, so the source is likely the connection to the house or the main supply lines. We encourage everyone to have their water tested in South Oakland.

PWSA is currently mandated by DEP and EPA to replace seven percent of publicly-owned lead service lines per year. With a unanimous vote, City Council recently passed legislation that positions the city to help Pittsburgh Water and Sewer Authority customers replace private lead service lines when PWSA completes adjacent line work, but no funding yet.  If more people get their water tested in South Oakland, and the readings are similarly high, we as a neighborhood can appeal to Council President Kraus to make South Oakland a priority when the City plans any action.

Mayor William Peduto, the City of Pittsburgh Department of Innovation & Performance, the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh, the Housing Authority, and the Pittsburgh Water & Sewer Authority today announced the opening application period for the second cycle of the PGH Lab program.

PGH Lab is a program designed to connect local startup companies with the City of Pittsburgh to explore new ways to use technology and new services to make local government more efficient, transparent, sustainable and inclusive. The program gives the companies an opportunity to beta test their products and gain valuable feedback. During the pilot period startups will be connected with a “city champion” that will guide them through the 3- 4-month pilot period.

Recently, Pittsburgh City Council has adopted a Complete Streets Policy. As a part of that policy, a Complete Streets Advisory Board will be formed to advise the City on best practices and projects for more bike-friendly and walkable streets.
More information on the new policy can be found here

On the Advisory Board will be 4 resident representatives. The Department of City Planning is accepting applications for resident representatives.
The application can be found here.

City Council passed Councilman Daniel Lavelle's legislation that creates a Housing Opportunity Fund for Pittsburgh. The Fund will ensure that every neighborhood in our city receives the investment it needs and that longtime residents are able to share in the “New Pittsburgh.” The Fund will help stop the displacement of low income individuals by keeping housing affordable, and create strong, stable communities where all Pittsburghers can thrive.

Pittsburgh is currently facing a shortage of nearly 17,000 affordable rental units. The lack of affordable housing has become a pressing issue in recent years as new development has driven up the housing prices in neighborhoods long occupied by low and middle income residents. This legislation will address the issue of creating affordable options in the City of Pittsburgh.

Mayor William Peduto's administration is implementing a new mapping tool to make building permit and zoning information easy to search and view.

Legislation is being introduced to Pittsburgh City Council on Tuesday to purchase software and support services from "buildingeye," a firm that builds interactive city maps to track planning, permit, license and violation data.

Through the data visualization tool, residents, businesses, developers and others will be able to view and search a detailed map that shows all building and zoning data happening in every neighborhood citywide. The tool is currently used by city and county governments in San Francisco, Colorado, Oregon and elsewhere.
