Americans have always been really into their food, but in recent years, many have gotten more particular about their palate. Hence, the foodie.
These discerning diners are more likely to go for 100% grass-fed beef than a McDonald’s burger, and they’ll choose locally owned and locally sourced eateries over chain restaurants.
The desires and dining dollars of these epicures have helped take the culinary scene up a notch in many cities. And that means more great food for everyone, especially for those in San Francisco and Portland, which top NerdWallet’s list of the Best Cities for Foodies.

Annual Juneteenth Celebration – 6/13-14 Market Square Downtown

Saturday – June 13, and Sunday – June 14, will be Pittsburgh’s Annual Juneteenth celebration:  Martin R. Delany Fest and 3rd Annual Community Awareness Day. The Juneteenth celebration commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in the U.S. in June 1865.  This year’s celebration will be held at Market Square in Downtown.

CitiPark Pools Open Tue 6/9; Expanded Swimming Opportunites For Youth

The City of Pittsburgh will open its 18 outdoor swimming pools on Tuesday, June 9, and launch an initiative to encourage children 15 years and younger to learn to swim and enjoy Citiparks aquatic facilities throughout the summer thanks to an innovative approach by Citiparks in response to Council's efforts to promote free swimming for low and moderate income families with children.
City residents 15 and younger who register at Citiparks Recreation Centers can swim for free all summer.

Only children presenting valid Recreation Center membership cards will receive free entry to the Citiparks pools; all others will need to pay daily admission or purchase a yearly pool tag.  To receive the free admission, a parent must register each child – who must be 15 years or younger and a resident of the City of Pittsburgh – at any of the Citiparks’ 10 Recreation Centers and then bring the membership card to the pool each day for entry. 

In addition, in 2015 the City will expand the opportunity for children ages 6 to 15 years old to receive free swimming instruction at all pools.

This summer Citiparks will offer free learn-to-swim classes at every pool location during a two-week period from June 22 – July 3 from 11 to 11:45 a.m. each weekday.  Spots are limited, so advance registration for this popular program is necessary.

Registration for free learn-to-swim classes will take place at each pool location.  Advance sale of pool tags and registration for classes will take place on Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7, from 1 – 6 p.m. and on Monday, June 8, from 4 – 8 p.m.

  • Hours of operation for the outdoor pools are weekdays 1 – 7:45 p.m. and Saturdays, Sundays and holidays 1 – 5:45 p.m.
  • Individuals can purchase pool tags for year-round admission to Citiparks outdoor pools and the Oliver Bath House, which operates in the off season.  Cost of pool tags for City residents:  $60 for family of four; $10 for each additional family member; $30 for adult (16 years and older); $20 for seniors (60 years and older); $15 for youth (3 – 15 years old); free for child (2 years and younger). Family passes for active duty military and disabled veteran residents are at no cost.  For non-City residents the cost is $45 for adult or youth.  Those interested in purchasing daily admission can do so at any pool beginning on June 9.  Cost is $3 for children ages 3 – 15 and $5 for individuals 16 and older.

For two days in July, the Rachel Carson Bridge in Downtown Pittsburgh will transform into Picklesburgh, highlighted by a giant flying Heinz pickle balloon, custom built by a team that also crafts balloons for Disney and the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. The Picklesburgh festival is a culinary celebration that goes beyond the dill pickle to include international dishes, prepared foods and artisan cocktails that feature pickled ingredients; an embrace of the farm-to-table movement and the rising popularity of canning; a selection of handcrafted foods and artisan cocktails from local restaurants; informative how-to demos and author talks at the Whole Foods Market demo area; merchandise such as pickled goods, books and DIY products.

Shakespeare Camp For Kids At Falk School – 6/22-26 or 6/29-7/3

Falk Laboratory School and PICT Classic Theatre are excited to announce the second annual Shakespeare Camp. This year’s production is A Midsummer Nights Dream, one of Shakespeare’s much loved comedies.
The camp is being offered in two1-week sessions:
  • June 22nd – June 26th
  • June 29th – July 3rd
Each week-long session of the camp includes a wide range of activities, such as a “behind the scenes” field trip to The Charity Randall Theatre ensemble building, reading of the Bruce Coville storybook version of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, “direct the actor” sessions, writing activities, kinesthetic activities including a Midsummer-themed tag game to be played in the gym, art activities, block play (including the creation of Midsummer “action figures”), and of course performance-based acting activities, including scenework and tableaux vivant.    PICT teaching artists will participate during activities over the course of each session of camp. The camp culminates in a performance of A Midsummer Night’s Dream scheduled
for 1:00 PM on Friday June 26th, and Friday July 3rd.
If you would like to register your child for Shakespeare Camp, please visit the Family Access Portal and submit the Shakespeare Camp Registration Form by April 24th. The camp registration forms are located in the Camp Section of School Forms Online. Full payment is due by May 4th and should be sent in with your child or mailed to Falk, attention Tina Mattis. In the “memo” section of the check, please write “Shakespeare Camp” and your child’s name.
We will accept the first 20 campers who have submitted a completed registration form and made full payment.

Welcoming Pgh & CitiParks Launch Spark! Film Series With Summer Cinema In The Park

Mayor William Peduto’s Welcoming Pittsburgh Initiative is partnering with Citiparks to present the Spark! Film Series at this summer’s Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park. Spark! includes a vibrant lineup of films that feature stories from diverse cultures. The series seeks to bring together Pittsburghers of all backgrounds and spark an engaging cultural dialogue.

“Building bridges of understanding between cultures is at the heart of Welcoming Pittsburgh,” says Mayor Peduto. “By creating opportunities to come together as neighbors and learn about one another, the Pittsburgh of my grandfather and the Pittsburgh of tomorrow will grow together.”

Spark! will showcase: Million Dollar Arm, The Refugees of Shangri-La, Cesar Chavez, Selma, McFarland USA, and Cantinflas. The first film in the Spark! series will debut on June 10. Dollar Bank Cinema in the Park runs June 7 through August 30 ​at seven park locations throughout the City of Pittsburgh.

“Our Citiparks team is committed to connecting with our residents in a way that resonates and brings our community together,” says Citiparks Director Jim Griffin. “Presenting the Spark! Film Series with Welcoming Pittsburgh reflects the growing landscape of our city,” Griffin noted.
