Mayor William Peduto giving high school students full voting power on public schools task force

PITTSBURGH, PA – City high school students, don’t miss your chance to tell Mayor Peduto what to do.

The deadline is next week for Pittsburgh Public Schools high schoolers to apply for a spot on Mayor William Peduto’s task force on public education. The 21-member body will meet through the spring and summer to study and recommend ways to strengthen our public schools and surrounding communities, and issue a report at the start of the next school year. School officials, community leaders and parents are part of the task force but the mayor wants students to help as well. He’s reserved three spots for Pittsburgh high school students, each of whom will serve with full voting power. Here’s how to apply:

Go to http://pittsburghpa.gov/mayor/education-task-force and fill out an application form. You also need to submit via the website a resume and a one page letter to the Mayor explaining why they would like to serve on the task force. Applications and all materials are due by March 7, 2014.

Urban Matters is an arts- and design-based program for youths, ages 14-18, who live in Pittsburgh’s distressed neighborhoods.  It was developed to teach them how to examine and communicate URA and other key civic processes in order to gain an understanding for themselves, and to be able to communicate these processes to their peers, community residents and other stakeholders.

In celebration of Black History Month, the City of Pittsburgh will collaborate with Toonseum to present a monthlong exhibition in the lobby of the City-County Building titled “Beyond the Funny Pages:  The works of art and life captured in comics.”

The public is invited to attend a reception for the opening of the exhibit on Monday, February 3, 2014 from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. The reception will include refreshments, musical entertainment and remarks by Mayor William Peduto and other individuals involved with the City’s Black History Month celebration.

David Sobel is the “father of place-based education” and shares insight into ways that we can all find inspiration from place and by keeping our “feet in the clouds.” David demonstrates how we can all learn from our surroundings. SCHOOL 2 CAREER ANNUAL COLLEGE FAIR

School 2 Career (s2c) has partnered with the United Way (APOST) Lights On Afterschool event to host the Annual College Fair on October 17, 2013 at the Consol Energy Center.

This has been an annual event for the s2c program since 2005. This year’s College Fair will be held from 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM.

Lights on Afterschool is a national awareness building day to recognize the importance of keeping the “lights on afterschool” and to bring support around the importance of afterschool programs. “Each October, 1 million Americans and thousands of communities nationwide celebrate Lights On Afterschool to shine a light on the afterschool programs that keep kids safe, inspire them to learn and help working families.”

Please attend the county-wide event at the CONSOL Energy Center on Thursday, October 17th from 1:00 – 6:30 pm.  The schedule of Events are as follows:

MAYOR ANNOUNCES APPLICATION PERIOD FOR FALL CIVIC LEADERSHIP ACADEMY CLASS

(PITTSBURGH, PA) July 9, 2013   Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced that applications for the fall 2013 Civic Leadership Academy (CLA) are now available. One of the Mayor’s 10 servePGH initiatives, CLA is a free 10-week course that aims to educate residents about local government. Beginning September 18, and concluding on November 20, participants will attend 10 weekly sessions on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 8:30 p.m. to learn how different City departments work to ensure a safer, more livable City and to become more informed civic leaders. Applications are available at pittsburghpa.gov/cla and must be submitted by August 23rd. 

This Monday, July 15th  at 6pm there will be a free Dollar Bank Homebuyer workshop at The Corner in West Oakland, 200 Robinson St.

This is a great opportunity for first time homebuyers looking for resources and guidance through this process!

I am happy to announce that Dream Cream Ice Cream in Downtown Pittsburgh has partnered with the Jeron Xavier Grayson Foundation to provide funds to support local youths in Pittsburgh for scholarships.
The Jeron Xavier Grayson Foundation has been chosen as a ‘Dreamer’ for the month of July, and have chosen ‘Cookies & Cream’ as their flavor. For each sale of the Cookies & Cream ice cream that takes place this month, a portion of all sales will go the the Grayson Foundation.

The Pittsburgh Green House, a project of ACTION-Housing, Inc., is a 110-year-old home that has been renovated as a weatherization training and educational facility where contractors and the general public can learn about residential energy and water savings and making homes healthier. Visitors can browse the resource center for information on do-it-yourself projects, contractors, and retrofit financing; engage in interactive educational activities; discover useful facts on informational signage throughout the building; and interact with our knowledgeable staff.

ACTION-Housing staff, regional experts, and a variety of local nonprofits and product specialists will teach a range of classes geared toward the general public on a rotating schedule. Contractors can receive hands-on training including building science, weatherization skills, blower door technology, and Building Performance Institute (BPI) certification in a typical regional home preparing them for career opportunities in the residential weatherization and retrofit market. (PITTSBURGH) May 2, 2013 Mayor Luke Ravenstahl today announced that applications are available for the City’s third annual Youth Civic Leadership Academy (YCLA), a free six-session program designed to educate and engage high school students about the inner-workings of City government. From visiting a water treatment plant to meeting with fire fighters and emergency responders, students will learn the ins and outs of Pittsburgh local government. YCLA will take place every Tuesday and Thursday evening beginning July 9 through July 25, 2013 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. YCLA is the youth component of the Mayor’s Civic Leadership Academy, and part of his servePGH initiative.
